Types of UPVC Door Handles
If your upvc door handle needs replacing it's essential to find the right replacement for your home. Locksmiths can provide and fit high-security uPVC handles that come with additional security features.
The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Take these measurements to make sure the new uPVC handle will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rod that pivots around the point. When you apply force to the end of the lever, it tends to rotate the fulcrum to the direction of the force applied. This rotates the fulcrum, increasing the applied force and allows you to lift or move something that would require more force if you tried to apply it directly to the load.
The distance between the fulcrum and the point where you apply the force determines the distance the lever is able to move. This is known as the mechanical advantage. The more the lever is extended more, the greater the advantage in terms of mechanical. You can determine the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum until the point at which you are applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and where you will end the lever.
Levers can also have different effects based on the way in which forces are applied. A lever in class 2, for example, has a tendency of rotating in the opposite direction once the force of the effort is applied. If you push the handle of a door, the forces will produce similar rotational effects to this.
However, levers don't create energy. Levers multiply the force by making small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into larger amounts of force applied over shorter distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and transport massive amounts of cargo. This is also the principle behind levers found in many everyday tools like crowbars, fishing rods claws for hammers, and even your legs when you sit on the hand brake of your vehicle.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles, also referred to as upvc door handles, have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. Lever pad handles are available in a variety of finishes & variations and can be used on a wide range of materials such as UPVC doors, Aluminium doors & Timber Doors. They are sold in pairs for the outside and the interior doors, with spindles and screws included. They are available in hand and unhandled versions to accommodate different types of users.
They are commonly used in new constructions and are used to replace the existing doors made of upvc. The levers are raised to open all the multipoint locks and the key is turned to close or unlock the door. They provide additional security compared to lever handles for doors as the locking operation is only accessible by entering the door with keys in the event that the door is locked.
They're not as secure as a cylinder bolt however they are a cost-effective option to provide extra home security. The only disadvantage is that they don't provide the same level protection as a cylinder lock and therefore don't block access to your home if the door is left open.
The majority of the lever pad door handles made of upvc that we offer are manufactured by top manufacturers in the industry and will be manufactured with good quality components. In general, they are supplied with a manufacturer's guarantee.
Typically, these will be designed to be compatible with a 92mm lock, or the replacement version of this known as a Paddock lock. They will have a 92mm cylinder centre on the inside and 62mm on the outside and be equipped with two spindle followers. Some are supplied with the backplate inserted, while others are removable for different fixing centers.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches, which are the simplest of door handles are used. Pressing down on the lever triggers a simple latch mechanism inside the door to keep it shut, and can be locked using a key. Some lever privacy handles work on the same principle but with an additional snib, similar to a doorknob.
A snib can be a very useful tool, particularly in homes where privacy and security are essential. You can use the snib button to stop your partner from entering until they are prepared. This kind of handle can also be put in for doors in the interior, like those in bedrooms, where you wish to restrict outside access.
Snib buttons may cause problems in certain circumstances, especially when you have old locks and warped doors. If the snib is applied in error or by a person who isn't quite used to it, the door can close and shut you out. It is possible to gain entry by knocking the door frame or letterbox. However this isn't a good idea.
If your uPVC has a snib we recommend replacing it with a smart lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. They can be retrofitted to pull handle kits with double turns and come with cover plates that hide the holes that are already present, allowing for a seamless install. The E-LOK application can be used to open doors using RFID cards or a mechanical keys. Passcodes are also available for security and convenience. The system is tested to 200k cycles to ensure durability. The handles themselves are constructed using a solid metal structure and are BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 for resistance to corrosion.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This is a popular handle style for front doors. It has the advantage of stopping the door from being opened from outside without a key, if the lock is not deadlocked. This is accomplished by the 'pad'-shaped external handle that locks in the gap between the handles and the lock case to stop the latch from being withdrawn or the door from being opened.

This handle is designed to work with uPVC multipoint locks which use a split spindle mechanism. This kind of operation requires that the internal lever handle and external pad handle both be fitted to the same lock case. It could be a simple replacement of the existing uPVC handle, but it may also require a new lock case or a brand new set to handle furniture.
These aluminium lever/movable pads door handles are designed to be used on uPVC and come with an unmaintained slide bearing. They also come with fixing lugs, spring cassettes and a non-stick slide bearing. The handles have a cut-out for a euro-profile, and can be fitted to many uPVC or timber doors.
Lever-movable pads are available in a variety of finishes and can be used with a variety of multipoint locks. They are specifically designed to be used with split spindle locks which have the 92mm cylinder as their centre and require a specific set of split spindles that is supplied by the manufacturer of the lock.
These Hoppe London lever moveable pad handle 77G/3831N/113 is made of cast aluminum with an anodized finish that is scratch and corrosion resistant. They are compatible with many other Hoppe products like handles for french door handles, and window handles . They come with a security escutcheon.
Lever/Moveable Snib
The lever/lever handles are one of the most popular kinds of doors handles made of upvc. They come in many styles. It has two inline handles that move and can be locked using either a key or a thumbturn cylinder inside. Pad handles can be used as an alternative to lever/lever handles. It is made up of an adjustable or fixed pad that can be used to operate the lock. These Fullex handles come with a spring-loaded lever pad and a snib which can be turned on to hold the latch.
When choosing a replacement upvc handle, be sure to think about the screw centres as well as the back plate's length, and the PZ measurement.
